We awoke to the peacefulness of the Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, right along the Missouri River.  We visited the museum and walked the fort area, palisades, and parade grounds.  The fort was built along the Missouri River to protect workers building the railroad against Native Americans.

Here, General George Custer was the commander of the 7th Calvary from 1874-1876.  He and his wife, Libby,  lived here.  There is a replica of their home to tour.

Then we took a short jaunt across the Missouri River to North Dakota’s state capital, Bismarck.  We just had to visit the capital; it’s my thing.  This building is 21 stories tall and has an observation floor on the top.  The views were amazing.  We could see the Fort from up there!  Fun Fact:  at 21 stories, the capital is the tallest building in the entire state of North Dakota!

We had a wonderful lunch at The Walrus and then headed out of town.

We drove an uneventful three hour drive across ND to Fargo.  The landscape was spectacular.  Gone are the rugged mountains and terrains of the west.  Gone are the deserts.  Now the land is rolling hills, cows, horses, farms - the Great Plains.

We head into Fargo and stop to have some tea.  Then spend the night at Lindenwood City Park Campground.   It’s a park right in the city along the Missouri River.

Tomorrow we leave ND and head to yet another state, Minnesota - the “Land of 10,000 Lakes.
