Well, we were off to find more adventures on Route 66. We were leaving the Wagon Wheel Motel in Cuba, Missouri and heading to Munger-Moss Motel in Lebanon, Missouri. Along the way we encountered many Roadside Attractions.

First up, the World’s Largest Rocking Chair (on Route 66) in Fanning, Missouri. It’s 40 feet tall! The gift shop here has a huge selection of local soda pops. Dan tried a cream soda. They also carried a soda pop from our hometown of Detroit, Faygo!

Off to Rolla...we met a giant Hillbilly and the entire A&W family - Dad, Mom, Teen, & Baby all holding there respective burgers. Stopped in and met Tim Jones, owner of the Totem Pole Trading Post. He proudly announces to each customer “we are the last ma & pa gift shop on Route 66 - in Missouri, for over 70 years.” I got my picture taken by the original Totem Pole which originally beckoned tourists in from the roof of the old building.

Then we were off to Missouri Science & Technology University where we saw Stonehenge! Well, not the real UK Stonehenge, but a partial half-scale reconstruction. Sadly, there were no druids.

Further down the road, we came upon a portion of Route 66 known as Hooker’s Cut. This cut was once Missouri’s deepest road cut and was constructed to avoid Devil’s Elbow, a curvy road that followed the river. Hooker’s Cut was built during WWII to help with the transportation of wartime vehicles and personnel across the country from Ft. Leonard Wood.

Next stop was a “tourist trap“ - Uranus Fudge Factory. Lots of corny jokes and puns, large gift shop, tasty fudge, and many other things to do and see.

We ended our day at the Munger-Moss Motel in Lebanon, Missouri. This 1946 roadside motel once had a restaurant and gas station, but the motel is still thriving. Our room was the ultimate in gold crushed velvet: the chairs, bedspread and even the lampshade! Here we dreamt of what tomorrow’s journey will bring.
