Our westward journey continued as we left Tulsa behind.  Our first stop along the Route was Stroud, Oklahoma “the Crossroads of America.” We stopped into the Rock Cafe.  A diner made in 1930 by the very rocks that were dug out in front to make The Mother Road.  We were hoping to meet the owner, Dawn Welch, but sadly she was not in today.  She was the inspiration for Pixar’s Cars Sally the Porsche, and her diner was the inspiration for the Cozy Cone Cafe. I did buy my Sally car there and Dawn had pre-autographed the package.  Yay!

Roadside Attractions we saw along the route included a UFO and a giant gravity gas pump. We also saw the first plumbed outhouse, and remnants of 1920’s filling station that was also used for counterfeiting.

We headed to Chandler, Oklahoma and went to McJerry’s Art Gallery.  Jerry McClanahan is the author of the EZ 66 Guide we’ve been using.  He welcomes visitors and he autographs your copy!  He also updated some pages for us.  What a nice guy.  Just around the corner was the Route 66 Interpretative Center.  Nice little museum and a great place to cool off.

The Hydra Motorcycle from "Captain America"

Onto Warwick, and the Seaba Station Motorcycle Museum. What a collection.  We met one of the owners, Jerry who had many stories to share.  Dan was in heaven - “hog heaven.”  One of the bikes there was the Hydra motorcycle from the movie Captain America.  They also own the Captain’s bike, but he likes to drive that one!

Off to Arcadia to see the historic Round Barn.  Built in 1898, the owner made it round because he believed tornadoes would then veer around it.  It was beautifully restored by the family in the 1990’s and welcomes visitors.

Next stop, Pops in Arcadia, a diner and store with hundreds of flavors of soda pop.  Here a 66-foot soda pop bottle beckons to parched travelers.  Some of the unique flavors are creamed corn, buttered popcorn, celery, and green apple jalapeño!  Yep, you read that right, those are soda pop flavors!  Dan was not so adventurous and purchased Black Cherry Cream, Orange Cream, and Sweet Peach.

Then we  journeyed to Oklahoma City. We saw the state capital building.  We also drove by a quirky 1930’s triangular sided building.   It was once a grocery store.  The giant milk bottle on the roof was used to advertise their little market.

Oklahoma City National Memorial was our last stop of the day.  This site honors the victims, survivors, and first responders affected by the bombing in 1995.  This was moving and very peaceful.

We spent the night at Two Fountains RV Resort in Oklahoma City. Tomorrow - Texas - Yeehaw!
