Cuba, Missouri is filled with Murals!

Today finds us in Cuba, Missouri, known as Mural City.  They have several murals painted on buildings throughout the downtown area.

Bette Davis vs. Paparazzi - in 1948

My favorite is a mural of Bette Davis and her husband, who happened to be staying in town in 1948.  The newspaper photographer asked to take her photo, she said No! However, he took it anyway.  Her irate husband chased the photographer down, but to no avail.  The next day the photo was on the front page.  This murals depicts the incident.

We had lunch at the Missouri Hick BBQ.  Dan liked his pulled pork wrap and I was able to get some veggies!   It was all delish!  A real Missouri barbecue.

We saw 2 restored cottage-styled gas stations.  These became popular in the 1920-30s to make car travel more glamorous!

Next stop, Bob Mullins’ Gasoline Alley.  Bob loves collecting old gas station signs and memorabilia, especially from Route 66.  What a collection!  Then a drive by the old Highway 19 Drive-In, still showing movies.  Tonight’s feature: Toy Story 4.  However, there is a height restriction and our RV is too tall. Bummer!

We are staying at the iconic Route 66 Wagon Wheel Motel.  It is beautiful.  It is the “oldest continuously operated motel on Route 66 - completely restored!” Complete with original neon signs!  What a day in Cuba.
