7/2/19

Pecos National Historical Park is our first stop today.  It has the ruins of the Pecos Pueblos, which once had over 2,000 residents living there.  We saw a few archeologists working on the church.  There were warnings to watch for rattlesnakes “avoid & report” - Yikes!

Next, the small village of Glorieta, New Mexico.  Here we are at the highest elevation on The Mother Road - 7,500 feet.  This town is also known for being the “Gettysburg of the West.”  For three days in March of 1862, Yankees defeated the Confederates.  This was one of the the most western battles of the American Civil War!

Then we headed into the state capital, Santa Fe.  The unique Capitol is a round building, made of adobe.  The historic plaza in the center of town boasts many churches, art galleries, the Georgia O’Keefe museum, cafes, and lots and lots of shopping.

There is an open-air Native American market selling beautiful weavings and jewelry.  I ended up with a fabulous pair of turquoise earrings. Thanks Dan!

We visited both the Oldest Church in America, San Miguel (1609) and the Oldest House in America (1640s) with the foundation dating back to the 1300s!

We also saw the Loretto Chapel, home of the Miraculous Staircase

We stayed at the Old Santa Fe Inn, just a short walk to the plaza.  It was lovely.

Tomorrow: onward to Albuquerque.
