Today, our journey continued through Oklahoma.  We began with a drive through Yukon, hometown of Garth Brooks.  We drove across the Canadian River on a picturesque bridge, one of many we would see today. The rolling hills, pastures, and streams were beautiful.   Route 66 in Oklahoma is basically oil, cows, and cowboys!

Then we came upon Hydro, Oklahoma, where the “Mother of the Mother Road” lived and ran a business for over 60 years!

We visited two wonderful museums today, as well.  We saw several roadside oddities, too (giant oil drill, giant Kachina doll, one room outdoor jail, and an eclectic windmill collection.)

Erick, Oklahoma may be a pretty unknown town, but it’s home to two famous songwriters:  Roger Miller “King of the Road” & Sheb Woolley “Giant Purple People Eater.”  Both have a street named after them and they intersect right in the middle of town.

Last  stop in Oklahoma was Texola (Texas & Oklahoma combined!) Here we crossed over the state line into Texas.  We took several videos and photos right in the middle of the street and never saw another car!

Leaving our 4th state, Oklahoma, we enter into Texas, state number 5 on Route 66.  We head to our final town for the day.  There are two must-do’s for us in Shamrock, Texas.  First we head to Blarney Stone Plaza, where a piece of the actual Blarney Stone from Ireland is on display.  And yes, I kissed it!  I will now have the gift of....um...eloquent speech, for the rest of my days!

The second must-do in Shamrock was to see the U-Drop In.  Built in 1930’s Art Deco and neon, this was a Conoco filling station and cafe diner.  But the real reason...it was Pixar’s inspiration for Ramone’s Body Shop in the movie Cars!  We were lucky enough to see it both during the day, and all lit up at night.

We spent the night at Texas Route 66 RV Park.  It was fabulous.  It was bordered by Route 66 on one side and a cow ranch on the other sides.  We were about 20 feet from a pasture of cows and calves.  And let me tell you, the “stars at night are big and bright” in Texas!

Journey on!
