Caverns, Outlaws, and Spirits

Since we did not have to be anywhere early today, we took our time and slept in a bit.  After we left the Casino Queen Campground and St. Louis, we were off.  First on the list, groceries!  We saw several old, defunct, Route 66 buildings and old neon signs.

We made our way to the Meramac Caverns.  You may have heard of these. The gentleman who turned this into a tourist attraction was a marketing genius.  He had barn sides and billboards advertising the Cavern Tour all over the country. But his most genius innovation: he invented the “bumper sticker!”  As families were visiting the caves, his employees attached bumper stickers to everyone’s car!  The cave tour was incredible.  We were 367 feet underground.   It was also legend that Jesse and Frank James hid out here, so the tale goes.  As we left the stalactites and stalagmites behind, we were back on the Mother Road.

We passed through a town known primarily for its water tower.  The town’s name is emblazoned on the sides - Bourbon!  Dan kept looking for the Rum tower.  We then traveled along a very picturesque, windy, bumpy dirt road to our next stay: Onondaga Cave State Park. We had a beautiful site; a forest, a creek winding by, and quiet. I mean quiet.  No WiFi.  We were off the grid.  So as the sun sets on our Rig, we await new adventures for tomorrow.
