Dan's time is being consumed in editing videos for our YouTube channel.

So Robin has assumed primary blogging duties.

June 15th:

The friendly morning crew at the Launching Pad

We started our morning back at the Launching Pad.  Here we took a quick stroll through their backroom museum. Several famous rockin’ guitars, celebrity posters and Route 66 memorabilia.  I purchased my Route 66 Passport and got my first stamp here at the Launching Pad.

Robin and her backup singers at the Polk-A-Dot

Next, we drove down the road to Braidwood and stopped in at the

Polk-a-Dot Drive-In.  We met Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, and the Blues Brothers!

Bob Waldmire's VW Microbus

Then, next stop, Pontiac, Illinois.  Wow!  What a city.  Here, they have the Route 66 Hall of Fame and Museum -with thousands of Route 66 artifacts and several docents who actually have lived and worked on The Mother Road.  So many stories!  They have my favorite Route 66 Icon and artist, Bob Waldmire’s bus and VW Microbus. Both of these vehicles were used on Rte 66 often.  Bob is the inspiration for Fillmore, of Pixar’s Cars movie!

Waldmire lived in this converted school bus

The bus where Bob actually lived was closed this day due to rain, but because of my enthusiasm and love of Bob, Dan & I got a private tour.  A dream come true!

The upper floor of the museum houses many, many uniforms and stories of Military personal; very interesting and well-done.  I felt very patriotic after leaving here.

Downtown Pontiac buildings are lucky enough to have been visited by the Wall Dogs - mural painters that travel the country.  So, along with several Bob Waldmire murals, the Wall Dogs have complemented the exterior walls of Pontiac!

Dan was very excited to see an original Cobra being driven cross county by a Florida gentleman.  We believe this vehicle was actually raced by Carroll Shelby!

Statue of Abraham Lincoln at the (current) county courthouse

The next stop along the way was Lincoln, Illinois.  The only city named after Abe while he was living.  He was not even president at the time.  Everyone just liked him that much!  He said something along the lines “anything named after me, can’t amount to much of anything.”  We saw the one of the replica courthouse in Logan County, where Lincoln practice law on the circuit.  The original was building was bought by Henry Ford in the late 1920’s and is now at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan.
