Bison and Horses and Prairie Dogs (Oh My!)

Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located where the Little Missouri River and rugged Badlands meet the Great Plains.  It is in Medora, North Dakota.  It is a 36 mile driving tour.  It is home to bison (we saw yet another one that sauntered right next to the rig!), elk, wild horses (yep, saw them, too) and prairie dogs (of which we saw hundreds!)

In the 1880’s, Teddy Roosevelt (then in his late 20's) moved here to hunt, reflect, and rest.  It was here where he gained a love for the outdoors and the landscape of our country.   His experience here would help shape “a conservation policy we still benefit from today” - our national park system.

We saw the log cabin he built and lived in, his traveling trunk, and other artifacts in the museum.  We traversed a couple of trails, drove through the badlands, climbed a couple of hills, and passed through the plains.

A bison created a traffic jam and casually walked by our rig.  We saw and heard hundreds of prairie dogs in a few “prairie dog towns.”  We even saw wild horses.

The views were breathtaking, the landscape was stunning.  All of our senses were activated.  The smells and sounds were incredible.  It was truly a spiritual place.

After dinner in Medora, we head east to Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park.  Here we spend the night and prepare for our adventure tomorrow.
